Here in the Philippines, summer’s already over but in other parts of the world, summer’s just about to begin. Despite the rainy days, I don’t see why it can’t be forever summer (at least in our minds). Consequently, I think there’s still merit in reviewing the trends that emerged for Spring / Summer 2012. Here, we take a look at those fashion trends which are best avoided and those which took center stage in the Spring / Summer 2012 runway shows.
1. Halter Neck Dresses
While it seems set in stone that dresses are very much in this summer, the halter neck is a dangerous choice. Having flooded the high street last summer, the style has been over-worn across the country. However, some designers, like Alexander McQueen, offer a fresh take on an otherwise trite look by making it in line with their own vision and aesthetic.
Elements of bondage transform a classic halter into an avant-garde creation.
In Prabal Gurung SS 2012, the cut-out designs in this flowy black halter dress make it a cut above the rest.
2. Floral Prints
Floral prints have taken the catwalks by storm in the past six months. From the subtle to the flamboyant, this feminine print design is a versatile choice. Best worn on dresses of any length and finished with a small belt, floral prints are undoubtedly a safe choice.
Phillip Lim 3.1 redefines floral prints by using tie-dye techniques.
Prabal Gurung’s flower patterns are far from the usual sweet prints. His are more graphic, vivid, and passionate.
Always finding their way in and out of the world of fashion, plimsolls are once again on the way out. This summer is all about femininity and adornment. Unfortunately, plimsolls don’t seem to be a strong enough element in design for 2012.
Vans Rata floral-print plimsolls for Spring Summer 2012.
Those looking to hold on the practicality which plimsolls once offered might do well to find a stylish pair of trainers. Although trainers have been considered a fashion faux pas for so long, as London hosts the Olympic Games this summer you should expect to see a return of high-end sportswear to the fashion world.
French fashion house Kenzo revamps the classic Vans with bold prints from their Spring Summer 2012 collection.
In place of plimsolls, wedge sandals in particular are taking the limelight for both casual and formal dress this summer. These shoes will go brilliantly with the floral prints which look set to characterise summer dresses and will offer you the perfect opportunity to expose your feet to a bit of sun.
This pair of pastel wedge sandals from Mulberry is the perfect summer accessory.
For their Spring Summer 2012 collection, Burberry gives weaves and beads a feel of luxury.
Not to be outshone, Alexander McQueen amps the romance with these floral wedges. I would gladly give away all my shoes in exchange for one of these! 🙂
