I can’t ever forget my first mouthwash experience. I poured a portion of Brand X into those little cups mouthwashes come with and chucked it into my mouth. A fit of wild coughing came after. Then I tried to shove a ton of water down my throat. Little naive me, I didn’t know that mouthwashes are supposed to sting. My mouth burned like hell. I swore off mouthwashes that day.
Well, at least until last year, when I got introduced to OraCare because of work. Because of the project, I got to learn a lot of things about it. Back then, OraCare was the only mouthwash that claimed to have no sting. I couldn’t believe it. Weren’t mouthwashes supposed to sting because that is precisely how they work? Well, I was WRONG. Apparently, that was made up information by marketers who thought that claim will make their product more believable.
How does a mouthwash that doesn’t sting work then? The answer is with stabilized chlorine dioxide. What exactly is this? The OraCare website gives us this answer:
Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) was discovered as an oxidizing agent which results in several beneficial actions such as destroying micro-organism and eliminating odors. It was found to be very effective in keeping the mouth extremely clean. The utilization of Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) to safely oxidize the source of impurities generated in the mouth provides a pure and clean result.
Basically, what it does is kill the real source of bad breath – volatile sulfur compounds – which comes as a result of food degrading in our mouths. Think of it as bacteria poop. When Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide gets to the sulfur, it oxidizes it then neutralizing its foul smell.
Why does Oracare have no sting? It’s simply because it doesn’t have alcohol. This is great news because products with alcohol actually don’t stop bad breath. It only masks the odor for a while then it will come back with a vengeance because alcohol dries out our throats and mouth, making it easier for bacteria normally washed away by saliva to survive in it. At the extreme end of the pole, prolonged exposure to alcohol-based mouthwashes can lead to mouth sores or even oral cancer. Scary, right?
Of course, a complete clean mouth experience cannot go without toothpaste. That’s why OraCare has two toothpaste variants too. The one below is the regular variant still with Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide plus Aloe Vera to moisturize the teeth after brushing.
For those concerned about teeth whitening, this is the variant for you:
OraCare White toothpaste has anti-staining ingredients plus the added benefits of Xylitol, which is proven to very effective in preventing tooth decay and cavities.
Today, I’m using both the OraCare mouthwash and toothpaste. I prefer the regular toothpaste over OraCare White because the former just tastes better for me. And no, I’m not just saying this because they are sponsoring a giveaway on my blog. One of the reasons I agreed to do so is because I have been using the product for a year now and can really vouch for its efficacy. 🙂
