To Switch or Not to Switch

More and more, I’ve been contemplating about switching to SMART. Ever since I’ve been invited to be part of their blog activities, I started to seriously consider the merits of switching to their network. More so when I saw their new TVC last weekend:

It struck me that in today’s fast world, we cannot afford to have any delay in our communications we others. Every second counts as it enables us to live more.

So, why do I want to switch?

1. Well, Globe has been very frustrating these days! How many of you have poor signal, can’t call properly because of this, or have received very late text messages? I have!

At our office in the middle of Ortigas, for example, the signal is rubbish. I get a call from client and we have to do the “Hello? Can you hear me?” script almost all the time. Then, just when we get to the heart of the discussion, the line suddenly gets garbled and the call is cut. Frustrating, right?

It’s actually very funny in a way because every time someone’s mobile phone rings, we have to run to the only spot that gets proper reception- the office lobby. So, we’re always in a panic every time we get a call. It can get very embarrassing too because how can you explain to your client that you’re signal’s too poor that’s why your conversation gets cut often?

It’s beyond annoying.

2. Every time I call my boyfriend in the UK, Globe keeps charging me even when he doesn’t pick up his phone. It wasn’t like this before. I was very surprised to find out that I lost some mobile phone credits even when his phone was just ringing. That’s so unfair, don’t you think? Now, I’m spending so much for calls that didn’t push through. I tweeted Globe last weekend about it and didn’t even get a response.

However, even despite these, I’m still having second thoughts because most of my friends and family are using Globe. Switching would be such a hassle.

Then, as if the fates were giving me a sign, I was informed by my coworkers yesterday that I just won a SMART Net Phone from PLDT SME Nation. I did a silly pose in front of their truck last week when it was touring Ortigas just for fun and didn’t really expect to win anything. However, as they say, great things come when you least expect it. This is really a sign. If I really do get the Net Phone, which I hope I would because I’d be very mad if theyย renegeย on their promise, then I’m definitely switching to SMART.

Plus, I’m envious of my Tita who got a Samsung Galaxy Tab and a free Samsung Corby for being such a loyal SMART Postpaid user. I want rewards like that too! Haha ๐Ÿ™‚

Lastly, if my experience with the SMART Rocket Chic is anything to go by, then I think I’ll be very happy with this network. I’ve been using it for several days now whenever I have client meetings out of the office and it’s been very fast and reliable. Since I’m not really a techie, I decided to use the Speedtest.net tool to help me do my comparison:

First you have the results for my Rocket Chic Plug-It. I erased my IP Address because I’m not sure if it’s safe to reveal that. Haha You can see that both my upload and download speeds are about 1.4 MBPS – very fast for a plug it broadband! Moreover, according to the speed test, my connection is faster than 81% of the Philippines and therefore garnered a grade of A-.

Now compare it to the Bayan DSL connection we have at home:

The download speed is at 0.61 MBPS while the upload speed is at 0.49 MBPS; both obviously less than 1 MBPS. It’s grade is an average C, which, according to this website means that it’s slower than 53% of the Philippines. How very disappointing!

So, what do you guys think? Should I switch or not? Help me decide please! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Hi Mich! So it seems that it’s not only here that Globe has bad services, hanggang diyan rin pala. I was wondering if Sun gives as good service as Smart since I heard that the company has been acquired by Smart some time ago, and Suncell’s cheaper. About switching, why not give it a try? If you’re frustrated, I don’t think you want to be any longer, right? Have a good day Mich! =p

  3. I have to admit, the ad is GREAT. hahaha! So, you’re thinking of making a complete move? I agree, that’s hard. Since most of my friends and family are on Globe, I might keep my globe phone and if
Smart does offer better internet speeds…I might consider the Rocket and Smart for browsing lang. So may compromise. haha

But since your work needs you to communicate with clients most of the time…switching is reasonable naman if the assurance of better connectivity is there. I’ve never been satisfied with Globe’s Tattoo plug-it though I know they’re trying to compete with Smart by offering a new lineup that rivals Smart’s Rocket. It’s frustrating that it’s just not practical to buy both just so I can see which is faster. haha

  4. I think every company has their own share of advantages and disadvantages. The difference lies on how issues are being addressed. I’m not happy with SMART most of the time but I’m still with them. Lol.

  6. I agree with Patsy! But if SMART has promos like Sun. Like for example you unli for 1 month P200 but you 200 text to all networks and how many minutes of calls. It’s not but so why not change to SMART. But even you gonna change keep the globe for you family/friends communication ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. I’m a Globe user ’cause most of my friends are using Globe, but I think Smart is really better as a network. We’re using Smart Bro at home and I can’t ask for more. Connection is good and service is great. We also have a Smart Bro plug-it and even that is surprisingly good compared to my friends’ Globe Tattoo. I haven’t thought of switching yet, but if I get a new phone (hopefully an iPhone or any Android), I’d definitely consider it. As for your case sis, go ako with Smart when you get your Smart Net phone na.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

BTW, a big CONGRATULATIONS Mich!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. gee that speed test is remarkable… however its not always the case.. i use smart bro.. its really not smart to use it in kalayaan and bulacan area… but when we’re in caloocan its really impressive. so I guess it depends in your location… but we have smart line and i dont have any complains with it.

  9. You should switch! It’ll be easier for you! And yes, there’s nothing more annoying than a poor signal and unwanted charges. I am so surprised that you get such poor speed with your Bayan DSL connection, I’ve been using mine for a year now and so far so good.

But I am really curious about the rocket chic plug-it, I’ve been hearing good reviews about it and I want to try. Is it a postpaid plan or do they have prepaid too?

  10. I just had a talk with Globe. I live in Ortigas Center and the signal is just stupid. I get a 1 bar EDGE signal inside my unit for all 3 of my globe phones. I cant even use my unli data because of it. I’m tweeting this blog of yours to them just to show how poor their service is getting at.

  11. I just finished talking with a Globe rep. on twitter. I live in Ortigas Center and to tell you honestly the signal is near impossible to get inside my unit. My unit is in the 19th flr so It shouldn’t be a hassle to get a signal. But I only get 1 bar EDGE at best on all 3 of my phones. Sheessshh! I’m tweeting this blog of yours just to let everyone know how their service is turning into.

If I wasn’t locked for one of phones with Globe I’ll gladly switch to SMART which in my unit has a strong signal!

    Just my 2 cents.

    1. I’m surprised you were able to get thru the call rep. I have no luck getting through them because of all the recorded messages when i call 211. Argh! I work in Ortigas too on the 38th floor and the signal here is just crap. Ugh! I’m applying for a Smart plan next month!
