Beauty Review: Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eye Liners

Some of you may already know that gel eyeliners are my eye liner of choice. Why? Because with these, I can create solid and clean lines like when using a liquid liner yet they are less challenging to use. These are also less smudgy and more long lasting than a pencil eyeliner.

For years, gel eyeliners have been more popular among makeup artists. At present though, they have become mainstream and more available to the public.

For this post, I’m going to review Tony Moly’s Backstage gel eyeliners. I have them in black and brown although these also come in other colors such as Pearl Brown, Pearl Navy, Pearl Violet, and Gray.

Packaging

The packaging for this is quite brilliant. The product itself comes in little pots just like other gel eyeliners but unscrewing the handle reveals a brush that one can use to apply it.

The brush is useable but I prefer applying this on with either an angled brush or a fine liner brush. I get a more precise line that way. However, if you do use the brush that comes with it, be sure to clean it after every use. Otherwise, the product will harden the bristles and it becomes quite rubbish. I learned from experience.

Quality

I noticed that the liner is very creamy and very easy to apply. It glides on very smoothly when I apply it on myself. This is great because this means that you can get a clean, solid line much easily. This product also claims to be waterproofΒ and I tested this by holding this swatch under a tap of running water. Didn’t budge so it passed that test. However, oily lids will cause this to smudge. I have noticed this transferring on my crease at the end of the day because my lids do get quite oily. You will have better chances of making this last if you put it on top of a powder eye shadow base.

Value for Money

At PHP498, I think that is very affordable for the quality and quantity of product you get in the pots. Believe me, unless you wear this every day, a pot will last for months and months. I got the brown one last year and I’ve only just scratched the top. The price is more or less equal to Maybelline’s Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner and a fraction of the price of Bobby Brown or Mac.

To give you guys a better idea of how it looks when applied, I took photos:

Black - Sorry about the not so sharp tip. I used the worn brush, which I have already mentioned is a no-no!
Brown - great for everyday and natural looks. πŸ™‚

So there you go! That’s basically the end of my review. If you’re a gel liner newbie, then this is one to try especially now since Tony Moly is on Sale til February 19!

Go grab some while supplies last! πŸ™‚

  1. The greatest advertising one could give to a product is by personal testimony. And because you have tried and tested this product and has proven it great…surely, others will follow suit.

I think this is a great gift to my girlfriends — and I mean friends who are gurlzzz…

  2. I prefer big eyes maybe because my eyes are small (Chinese descent) so eye liner is something I don’t go without. I use pencil eye liners during college days due to budget constraint but now, I got hooked on retractable eye liners which are far so easy to apply compared to pencils. This Gel Eye Liner is interesting, haven’t used one before. Hopefully I can go to Manila before their promo ends, haha! But I’ll surely try this one, anything for my eyes πŸ˜‰

    1. You can actually make your eyes look larger using eyeliners. For example, for ulzzang girls, the eyeliner is an essential tool πŸ™‚ A quick tip would be not to wear black eyeliner on your waterline because this narrows the eyes. Don’t flick it out too on the eye lid as it makes the eyes narrower:)

  3. loved how you did your own test to confirm it’s water proof :). i’ll probably check beauty shop to check if they carry the eyeliner. I need one now anyways. I am currently “overusing” my l’oreal liquid eyeliner :P. Thanks for sharing this sissy! πŸ™‚

  4. I’m trying out Elf’s cream liner now and just like this brand, it tends to smudge and transfers on my crease bcoz of my oily lids. But I love the packaging! that’s something different.. πŸ™‚
